Oregon CHL Training Classes 2026: Online vs In-Person Options Compared

Compare Oregon CHL training options. Online courses vs in-person classes — cost, time, what's covered, and which sheriffs accept each type.

Oregon law requires a handgun safety training certificate before you can apply for a Concealed Handgun License (CHL). You have two main options: take an online course or attend an in-person class.

Both types meet the legal requirement. Here is how they compare.

What Oregon Law Requires

ORS 166.291 says you must show proof of “competence with a handgun” to get your CHL. The law accepts several types of training:

  • A handgun safety course from a certified instructor
  • A hunter education course that included handgun safety
  • Military service (active, reserve, or honorable discharge)
  • Law enforcement training
  • A course from a nationally recognized firearms organization (NRA, etc.)

Most people choose either an online course or an in-person class. Both count.

Online Courses

How They Work

Online courses teach the same legal topics as in-person classes. You watch lessons, then pass a short quiz. When you pass, you get your certificate right away.

What online courses cover:

  • Oregon CHL laws and where you can carry
  • When you can and cannot use force
  • Firearm safety basics
  • Safe storage requirements
  • How to apply for your CHL

Who Online Is Best For

  • People with busy schedules
  • Anyone who already knows how to handle a gun
  • People who want to save money
  • Applicants who live far from a training center

What Online Courses Don’t Include

  • Hands-on practice with a real firearm
  • Range time with live ammunition
  • One-on-one feedback from an instructor

Important: Online courses cover the legal knowledge you need. But they don’t teach you how to shoot. If you are new to firearms, consider also taking a hands-on class at a local range.

In-Person Classes

How They Work

In-person classes are taught by a certified instructor, usually at a shooting range or training center. Most classes are 4 to 8 hours long. They cover the same legal topics as online courses, plus hands-on range time.

What in-person classes include:

  • Oregon CHL laws and use-of-force rules
  • Firearm safety fundamentals
  • Live-fire practice on a range
  • Instructor feedback on your technique
  • Safe handling and storage

Who In-Person Is Best For

  • First-time gun owners
  • People who want hands-on practice
  • Anyone who learns better in a classroom
  • People who want to build shooting confidence

What to Look For in an In-Person Class

  • Certified instructor — Ask about their credentials
  • Range time included — Some classroom-only courses skip this
  • Small class size — You get more attention
  • Good reviews — Check Google and social media
  • Certificate provided — Make sure it meets ORS 166.291

Do All Oregon Sheriffs Accept Online Training?

Yes. Oregon law (ORS 166.291) does not say training must be in-person. The law lists accepted training types, and online courses from certified instructors qualify.

All 36 Oregon county sheriffs accept online training certificates. This is state law — individual counties cannot add extra requirements.

If a sheriff’s office tells you otherwise, the law is on your side.

What Your Training Certificate Includes

No matter which type of course you take, your certificate should include:

  • Your full legal name
  • The date you completed the course
  • The instructor’s name and credentials
  • The course title
  • Your score (if there was a quiz)
  • A unique verification code or number

Print your certificate. The sheriff’s office needs to see it when you apply. Keep a digital backup too.

How to Choose

Choose an online course if:

  • You already know how to handle a firearm safely
  • You want to save time and money
  • You need your certificate quickly
  • You have a busy schedule

Choose an in-person class if:

  • You are new to firearms
  • You want hands-on range practice
  • You want feedback from an instructor
  • You learn better in person

Best of both: Take an online course for your CHL certificate, then sign up for a separate range session to build your shooting skills. This gives you the legal certificate you need plus real practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a hunter education card instead?

Yes, if it included handgun safety training. Oregon hunter education courses that cover handgun safety meet the CHL requirement. Bring your hunter education card to the sheriff’s office.

Do I need to pass a shooting test?

No. Oregon does not require a live-fire test for CHL. Some in-person classes include range time, but it is for practice — not a pass/fail test.

What if I fail the quiz?

Most online courses let you retake the quiz for free. You can review the material and try again right away.

How long is the certificate valid?

Your training certificate does not expire for CHL purposes. However, if your CHL expires for more than 1 year, you will need a new certificate to renew.

Can I take the class in another state?

Yes, as long as the course is from a certified instructor or nationally recognized organization (like the NRA). Oregon accepts training from any state.

Do I need training to renew my CHL?

No — if you renew on time (within 1 year of expiration). If your CHL has been expired for more than 1 year, you need a new training certificate.

After You Complete Training

Once you have your certificate, the next step is to visit your county sheriff’s office.

What to bring to the sheriff:

  • Training certificate
  • Two forms of ID (one photo ID)
  • Application fee ($50 to $65)
  • Proof of residency

Processing time: 15 to 45 days depending on the county.
