Your Oregon CHL expires after 4 years. To keep carrying, you need to renew it at your county sheriff’s office. The basic process is the same across Oregon, but fees, appointments, and wait times vary by county.

This guide covers the renewal process for every major Oregon county.

What Every County Requires for Renewal

Before diving into county details, here is what you need everywhere in Oregon:

  • Your current CHL card (bring the physical card)
  • Two forms of ID (one must be a photo ID)
  • Renewal fee ($50 to $65 depending on the county)
  • No new disqualifying events since your last CHL
  • New training certificate only if expired more than 1 year

You must renew in the county where you live. You cannot renew in a different county.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew in a different county?

No. You must renew in the county where you live. If you moved, you need to transfer your CHL to the new county first.

Can I renew online?

No. Oregon requires you to renew in person at the sheriff’s office.

Do I need new fingerprints?

It depends on the county. Some counties require new fingerprints for renewals. Others have your prints on file. Call ahead to ask.

How long does it take to get my new card?

Processing varies by county. Rural counties may take 10 to 15 days. Urban counties like Multnomah can take 30 to 45 days. Your card arrives by mail.

Can I still carry while my renewal is processing?
